There have been several very large security and feature updates for Windows 10 in 2018, some of these take a substantial amount of time to download and install. Depending on the computer specification and broadband speed this could be anything from 20 minutes to several hours.
How long should they take?
Windows 7 updates tend to be relatively small and shouldn’t take much time to install on most computers. Windows 8 and moreover Windows 10 are a different story altogether. The latest Windows 10 feature updates are very large and can potentially take hours to download and even longer to install. If the computer looks like it is taking a while to install any of these it is best to simply leave well alone until the process is completed.
Why so many?
This is a good question! The number and frequency of updates can become frustrating when you simply want to get on and use the computer. The majority of these are security based and as such are a requirement which all computers should have installed. There are a number of larger feature based updates which as the name suggests simply add extras to your computer.
