Windows asks if I want to install updates
Versions of Windows 7, 8 and 10 will almost always ask you to install updates at some point. This is normally when the computer is being shut down or restarted. Whenever Windows asks the question you can say yes to install any available updates unless there is a particular reason not to, see section three for more information.

Don’t updates install automatically?
Yes, in most case the Windows Updates are set to automatically install at a fixed time of day, quite often this is the middle of the night UK time so not ideal and many updates get missed for this reason.
Often the updates will download and then wait until the computer gets shutdown to install, asking you if this is OK before completing the task.

Reasons not to install updates or delay installation
There can be genuine reasons for not installing the updates on a particular day or at a certain time. Most common of these is if the update is a major one which could take 30 minutes to 1 hour for the installation to complete, this is not ideal if you want to go out and are not happy leaving the computer running.
Another reason is if you are simply unsure that the update is required, they almost always are but if in doubt then ask a professional for advice.
